Adrants linked to this video today. It’s an old one, from British Comedian Harry Enfield, but a good one.

User-generated content campaign for Mini in the UK

The “aveaword” campaign by Glue was a big hit for Mini in the UK. The live site is down so you can’t send the message on any more but you can create one and preview it here.

More recently Glue launched this site for Adidas.

I like that these are funny, short, personalized, novel, and the whole experience is send-to-a-friend. Lots of microsites that appear in the trade press online seem to me to be kind of long, involved and of dubious value to the user. These ones are a quick, easy and amusing enough distraction to be worth the effort on the part of the user, and for the client the brand message is conveyed clearly and simply.

Bypassing banks reinvents online charity

The latest entry in the e-philanthropy category is Kiva.org, a unique site that connects small businesses around the world with independent lenders. This means that any average joe can send a microloan to someone in a developing country using PayPal. By bypassing banks and organized charities, Kiva.org avoids administrative costs and red tape. Loans are paid back within a year, and donators get regular updates on the progress of the recipient’s business. You don’t need deep pockets to make a big difference: donations start at just $25.

This article is hilarious. I know you can all relate.

MTV goes HTML, FYI

WTF? (Okay, enough with the acronyms)

Alice posted to the Asides that MTV launched it’s HTML version recently, based on some undisclosed “user feedback”. Okay, it’s fast, it’s searchable, it’s linearized, but is it good? Hardly. It’s actually pretty butt ugly. This makes me sad; true, with all the really well done sites out there that are HTML/CSS driven, the bar is set high. But this was a great chance for the MTV team to really knock it out of the park and become a design and standards leader in the mass media online content world.

This is a very public and mainstream company which is making a stand in the world of web development, and the result, if you follow the over 600 comments posted to the MTV Labs blog, is setting the precedent to MTV.com users (many of the generation who consume more media online than off) is that HTML “suxx”.

Yikes, let’s give it another try, huh?

Whoops

melted san fran overpass

It is, of course, horribly wrong to gawk at the misfortune of others. Even when one truck driver single-handedly melts a large expanse of california highway. Still, accidents like this have provided us with entertainment for years, whether because we’re looking to commiserate or protect our precious gene pool. And if still photos aren’t enough, there’s always video. Or you can DIY, Japanese Flash-game style.
