The Big Rip-off Adventure

The Big What Adventure is brought to us, the common masses, by TBWA. Looks like they need our help!

This is an experiment in crowd sourced creativity.

An experiment whose goal is to both seek out and nourish creativity, wherever it may be.

Conventionally, ideas only come from a person with ‘creative’ on their business card. At TBWA\London we have a philosophy called Disruption which is all about breaking the right rules and doing things differently. As part of this, we believe that a good idea can come from anywhere and so we’ve created this site.

It’s a place where you will be able to submit ideas for real briefs. It could be an idea for an online advertising campaign, a TV commercial, a poster, an event, a new product or a new type of packaging - anything that you believe will solve a client’s particular business problem.

Every brief will be a real ‘live’ brief - an actual requirement for a piece of communication for one of TBWA’s clients

Power to the people! Good ideas can come from anywhere. So if the average Joe can rise up and present a Big Idea that makes it all the way to a real campaign, that would be vaulable for TBWA, right? I mean Big Ideas are everything in the ad industry - they’re going to reward the winning ideas with some cash, like, say, 25% of a creative director’s annual salary, right? Or maybe 10% of the agency fee for executing the idea?

In submitting your user content you understand that TBWA and its clients will be able to use, reproduce, develop, implement, adapt, distribute and promote all user content in any form and in all media, anywhere in the world, for any purpose, without payment to you.

Oh. Huh. Well, whatever, that’s cool. I still want to just contribute! I just want to share in this crazy Web 2.0 thing. My contribution means something! I’ll be helping out the impoverished CD’s of the ad industry AND getting famous at the same time.

In consideration of TBWA displaying your user content on thebigwhatadventure you hereby assign (by way of present assignment of future rights where applicable) with full title guarantee all intellectual property rights in your user content.

So by “crowd sourced creativity” they mean “do the work that defines our industry for us, and do it for free.” Cool.

Wow! Sign me up! That sounds great - I love having my ideas stolen from me!

From the site, FYI - I still don’t believe it:

The second is that once you’ve submitted your ideas, we actually own them. Now this is the sticky point – and it’s the one that’s rubbed some people up the wrong way – but we have to approach it this way. We’re not attempting to rob you of ideas; it’s simply a legal requirement that we have to fulfil in order to share real client briefs with you all. We promise to reward people for any ideas that we take forward – whether it is financial, career related or some other way. And unfortunately, you just have to trust us on this. Anyone who’s been reading around other people’s blogs commentating on this site will recognise that we’re going to get more stick for this. But sadly that’s just the way it is.

Sadly, sadly. That’s just the way it is. But trust us, we’ll “reward” you in “some other way.”
